Gary Magness was born in Texas and raised in Bozeman, Montana. His father, Bob Magness, founded Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI), a major cable television company. The family moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1966, and Gary grew up immersed in the cable business. His early experiences involved building microwave towers and stringing coaxial cable, which provided a foundational understanding of the industry.

Gary Magness inherited a significant portion of his father's wealth, becoming a large stockholder in TCI. After the merger of TCI with AT&T in 1999, he focused on managing his investments and diversifying his portfolio. This led to his involvement in various sectors, including oil, gas, real estate, and cattle ranching. He established Magness Land & Cattle, a premier Limousin ranching operation. His passion for classic cars led him to open Mango Motors, a classic car dealership in Denver.
