Early Life
Alfredo Egydio Arruda Villela Filho was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969. He is a descendant of one of Brazil's oldest banking families, his great-grandfather founded Banco Itaú. He experienced a personal tragedy early in life, losing his parents in a plane crash in 1982 when he was only 12 years old. He and his sister were subsequently raised by their aunt.
Rise to Success
Villela Filho holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia (1992) and an MBA from Fundacao Getulio Vargas. His career has been primarily centered on Itausa Investimentos Itau S.A., where he currently serves as Chairman. Before this role, he was the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors and also served as the Chief Executive Officer of the company until May 11, 2015.
Key Business Strategies
Villela Filho is known for his leadership in Itausa, which holds significant stakes in Itau Unibanco, the largest bank in the Southern Hemisphere. Itausa also has interests in Itautec, an electronics manufacturer; Duratex, a wood and bathroom fixture provider; and Elekeiroz, a chemical maker. He is a major individual shareholder in Itausa.
Philanthropy
Along with his sister Ana Lucia de Mattos Barretto Villela, Alfredo supports the Alana Institute, a non-profit organization that they co-founded in 1994, focused on promoting social work, education, and culture.
