Early Life
Wang Jianlin was born in Cangxi County, Guangyuan, Sichuan, China, on October 24, 1954. He is the eldest of five sons. His father fought in the People's Liberation Army. At 15, Wang joined the army. He served for 16 years, rising to the rank of commander.
Rise to Success
After leaving the military in 1986, Wang became the office administrator for the Xigang District government in Dalian. In 1988, he took over a small property developer, Xigang Residential Development, with a loan of $80,000. In 1992, he renamed the company Dalian Wanda. Under his leadership, the company grew into one of China's foremost conglomerates, with vast commercial real estate holdings, including shopping plazas, hotels, cinemas, and department stores.

Wang Jianlin's business strategy involved rapid expansion, focusing on commercial real estate and the development of Wanda Plazas. He diversified into entertainment by acquiring AMC Theatres and launching theme parks. He also invested in sports and culture, expanding his reach globally. Wang has also adopted a strategy of shifting from heavy to light assets, focusing on brand and management.

Wang Jianlin is known for his philanthropic efforts. He has donated millions to charitable causes, including supporting education and disaster relief. In 2010, he donated $197 million to charitable causes. He was also the top of the Forbes China Philanthropy List in 2010.
