Early Life and Military Service
Wang Jianlin was born on October 24, 1954, in Cangxi County, Guangyuan, Sichuan, China. He is the eldest of five brothers. His father was a peasant who later served in the People's Liberation Army. At the age of 15, Wang joined the People's Liberation Army and served for 17 years, rising to the rank of commander.
Transition to Business
After leaving the military, Wang transitioned to civilian life and worked as a local government official in Dalian. In 1988, he took over a struggling state-owned property company, Xigang Residential Development, and turned it around, borrowing approximately $80,000 to do so. In 1992, the company was renamed Dalian Wanda and went public.
Rise to Success
Under Wang's leadership, Dalian Wanda Group grew into one of China's foremost conglomerate companies. The group expanded into commercial real estate, entertainment, and sports. Key milestones include developing numerous Wanda Plazas across China, acquiring AMC Theatres in 2012, and investing in the entertainment industry. Wang also launched a mini-Hollywood in Qingdao and acquired the Edificio España building in Madrid.
