Daniel Seth Loeb was born on December 18, 1961, in Santa Monica, California. He is the son of Ronald and Clare Loeb. His father was a partner at a law firm, and his mother was a historian. Loeb's great-aunt was Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel and creator of the Barbie doll. Loeb attended Palisades Charter High School and later studied at the University of California, Berkeley, before transferring to Columbia University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 1983.

Loeb's career began at Warburg Pincus. In 1995, he founded Third Point LLC with $3.3 million from family and friends.
