Early Life
Tung Chee Chen was born in Hong Kong on December 15, 1942. He is the son of shipping tycoon Tung Chao Yung and the younger brother of Tung Chee-hwa, the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. His ancestral hometown is Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China. Tung earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Liverpool and a master's in mechanical engineering from MIT.
Rise to Success
Tung's career is deeply rooted in the shipping industry, following in his father's footsteps. In 1996, he was appointed chairman and CEO of Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL), one of the largest shipping companies in the world. Under his leadership, OOIL expanded its operations to over 100 countries, establishing itself as a major player in the global shipping market.

Tung demonstrated remarkable business acumen and leadership throughout his tenure. A pivotal moment in his career came in 2018 when he and his brother sold their entire 68.7% stake in OOIL to China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited for $4.3 billion.
