Tornqvist began his career in the oil and gas industry in 1977. He co-founded Gunvor Group in 2000 with Gennady Timchenko. Gunvor quickly grew to become one of the world's largest independent commodities trading companies, specializing in oil and energy. In 2014, Tornqvist acquired Timchenko's stake, becoming the majority shareholder. Under Tornqvist's leadership, Gunvor expanded its operations globally, diversifying into natural gas, coal, LNG, and related infrastructure. However, he has recently sold his shares in the company.
