Early Life
Sunny Varkey was born on April 9, 1957, in Ranni, Kerala, India. His parents, K.S. Varkey and Mariamma Varkey, were both educators. In 1959, the family moved to Dubai, where the young Sunny grew up. He attended Infant Jesus Anglo-Indian Boys' School in Kerala and later, St. Mary's Catholic High School in Dubai, followed by Bembridge School in the UK and the British Council for his A-Levels. As a child, he gained early entrepreneurial experience selling fruits on the street.
Rise to Success
Varkey began his career with a brief stint at Standard Chartered Bank before he ventured into various business sectors. In 1980, he took over the management of Our Own English High School, founded by his parents. Recognizing the growing need for English-language education for expatriate children in Dubai, Varkey expanded the school and added new ones, offering diverse curricula. This marked the beginning of his significant journey in the education sector. He established Global Education Management Systems (GEMS) in 2000 to manage the worldwide expansion of his schools.
Key Business Strategies
Varkey's key business strategy involved identifying and capitalizing on the demand for quality education in Dubai and later, globally. GEMS Education expanded rapidly, offering various curricula, including British, American, Indian, and International Baccalaureate. The company focused on providing affordable education while maintaining quality, attracting a large number of students. He has invested heavily in expansion, including opening the GEMS School of Research and Innovation, a $100 million project. The Varkey Group, established in 1979, now encompasses various businesses, with GEMS Education as its core.
Philanthropy
Sunny Varkey is deeply involved in philanthropy through the Varkey Foundation. The foundation aims to improve education for underprivileged children globally. In 2015, Varkey committed to The Giving Pledge, promising to donate at least half his wealth to charitable causes. The foundation focuses on initiatives such as enrolment and education-access programs and teacher training.
