Early Life and Education
Samuel Tak Lee was born in April 1939 in Guangdong Province, China, and his family moved to Hong Kong shortly after. He received his early education at Diocesan Boys' School in Hong Kong. Lee then pursued higher education in the United States, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in civil and environmental engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1964. He later obtained an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Rise to Success
After completing his studies, Lee returned to Hong Kong and joined Prudential Enterprise, the real estate company founded by his father and uncle in 1958. He took control of the business in 1985 and expanded its global portfolio. Prudential Enterprises owns the Prudential Hotel in Hong Kong and has significant holdings in Hong Kong, Japan, Switzerland, and Singapore. Lee made a significant acquisition in 1994, purchasing the 14-acre Langham Estate in London's Fitzrovia district. He also established a real estate presence in Tokyo in 1999, which was later sold for $1.2 billion in 2017. By 2019, he was the largest shareholder in Shaftesbury PLC, a London real estate investment trust.

Lee's business philosophy centers on patience, precision, and privacy. He focuses on long-term investments, stability, and diversification across global markets. In 2020, he sold his entire stake in Shaftesbury PLC for $589 million. In 2024, he sold part of his 1.3 million-square-foot property portfolio in the West End for $430 million.
Philanthropy
Lee is a known philanthropist. He founded the Tak Lee Foundation to fund educational and cultural institutions in Hong Kong and Mainland China. In 2007, he donated $9 million to Hong Kong's Diocesan Boys' School. In 2015, he donated $118 million to MIT to establish the Samuel Tak Lee Real Estate Entrepreneurship Lab, focusing on sustainable development.
