Early Life
Prathap Chandra Reddy was born on February 5, 1933, in Aragonda, a village in Andhra Pradesh, India. He came from an agricultural background. His father, Chandrasekhar Reddy, was a farmer, and his mother, Rajyalakshmi Devi, was a homemaker. He completed his medical degree from Stanley Medical College in Chennai in 1958.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Dr. Reddy pursued advanced training in cardiology in the UK and the USA. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center and a fellowship in cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic. He returned to India in the late 1970s and began his practice in Chennai. His vision was driven by a deep-seated desire to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare in India, inspired by an experience where he felt he could not provide critical care to a patient. In 1983, he founded Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, the first corporate chain of hospitals in India. The hospital chain has grown significantly, with 71 hospitals across the country.
