Prathap Chandra Reddy was born on February 5, 1933, in Aragonda, a small village in Andhra Pradesh, India. Growing up, he witnessed the lack of healthcare infrastructure, which inspired his future endeavors. He earned his MBBS from Stanley Medical College in Chennai and later pursued cardiology in the United States, where he observed advanced medical technologies and healthcare systems. This experience shaped his vision to transform healthcare in India.
Rise to Success
Dr. Reddy returned to India in the late 1970s and started his practice in Chennai. He founded Apollo Hospitals in 1983, the first corporate chain of hospitals in India. The first branch was inaugurated in Chennai. The Apollo Hospitals Group has since grown into one of the largest hospital groups globally.
Key Business Strategies
Reddy spearheaded institutional changes in private healthcare, establishing Apollo Institutes for postgraduate Medical and Nursing Education, Hospital Administration, Physiotherapy, Clinical Research, and numerous Paramedical Programs. His strategic initiatives included the Apollo Telemedicine Networking Foundation, Health Super Highway, Apollo Munich Insurance Co., and Apollo Reach Hospitals, creating a modern healthcare network that has served millions. Apollo Hospitals has expanded to over 70 hospitals with over 10,000 beds across 64 locations worldwide, employing over 65,000 professionals. The group also operates pharmacies, primary care and diagnostic centers, telehealth clinics, and digital healthcare services.
