Pedro Grendene Bartelle was born on January 23, 1950, in Farroupilha, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. He entered the business world in the early 1970s. His grandfather, a successful local businessman, provided financial support to Pedro and his twin brother, Alexandre, to purchase machinery and hire staff, marking the beginning of the family's venture.
Rise to Success
In February 1971, the Bartelle brothers launched Plástico Grendene Ltda., initially focused on producing screens for wine bottles. The company later became known simply as Grendene. Around seven years later, in 1978, the company began producing footwear, with the Nuar brand of sandals. In 1979, Grendene launched the Melissa brand, one of its most successful ventures. In 1979, Grendene produced their first sandal, the Melissa Aranha, after Pedro noticed the strip-sandals of fishermen from the French Riviera.
