Early Life
Martin Møller Nielsen was born in August 1964. He grew up in Grønbjerg, Denmark. At the age of 18, he obtained his pilot's license, and later he started skydiving. His father, who enjoyed gliding, died in a traffic accident when Nielsen was eight years old.
Rise to Success
Nielsen founded Nordic Aviation Capital (NAC) in Skive, Denmark, in 1990. NAC quickly became a leading regional aircraft leasing company. In 2015, Nielsen sold a 67% stake in NAC to EQT and Kirkbi, valuing the firm at $3.3 billion. By 2016, NAC had a fleet of 275 aircraft leased to 30 regional airlines, including notable names like Air Berlin and Etihad.
Key Business Strategies
Nielsen's key business strategy involved identifying and capitalizing on the growing demand for aircraft leasing. His approach was to acquire aircraft and lease them to airlines, providing them with flexible access to modern, fuel-efficient jets. He later brought in the Singaporean sovereign wealth fund GIC as an investor. In 2022, Nielsen sold his remaining shares in NAC.
