Early Life
Madhukar Balvantray Parekh was born into a Gujarati Jain family in Mumbai, India. His father, Balvant Parekh, founded Pidilite Industries in 1959, which laid the foundation for Madhukar's future success. He excelled academically, ranking 4th in the prestigious IIT JEE examination. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering from the University Department of Chemical Technology of University of Mumbai and a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, USA, in 1969.
Rise to Success
After completing his education, Madhukar joined Abbot Laboratories in the USA, gaining experience in the pharmaceutical industry. In 1971, he joined his family's business, Pidilite Industries. He played a pivotal role in transforming the company into a global leader in adhesives, sealants, construction chemicals, and hobby colors. He steered the company to become the market leader in the adhesives and sealants segment in India, and has also taken the legacy overseas, towards making Pidilite a true Indian MNC.
Key Business Strategies
Under his leadership, Pidilite has differentiated itself from competitors through product and brand innovation. The company invested heavily in R&D and established a subsidiary, Pidilite Innovation Centre in Singapore. Quick to identify new opportunities, Madhukar focused on expanding the product portfolio and strengthening Pidilite’s distribution network across urban and rural India.
