Jacobus Petrus "Koos" Bekker was born on December 14, 1952, in Potchefstroom, South Africa. He grew up on a maize farm in the North West province, an upbringing that instilled in him a strong work ethic and a pragmatic approach to problem-solving. He attended Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg and later pursued degrees at Stellenbosch University (law and literature) and the University of the Witwatersrand (law).
Rise to Success
Bekker's career began in advertising before he obtained an MBA from Columbia Business School in 1984. In 1985, he co-founded M-Net, the first pay-television service outside the United States, which later expanded to become MultiChoice. His leadership at Naspers, beginning in 1997, was pivotal. He transformed the company from a traditional print media group into a global technology and internet powerhouse. One of his most significant strategic moves was leading Naspers' investment in the Chinese internet giant Tencent in 2001, which became a highly successful venture.
