Early Life
Jacobus Petrus "Koos" Bekker was born on December 14, 1952, in Potchefstroom, South Africa. He grew up on a maize farm and demonstrated an early interest in academics, attending Hoër Volkskool Heidelberg. He pursued higher education at Stellenbosch University, earning degrees in law and literature, and later obtained another law degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. Bekker furthered his education with an MBA from Columbia Business School in New York.
Rise to Success
Bekker's career began in advertising before he co-founded M-Net/MultiChoice in 1985, South Africa's first pay-television service. He was also a founding director of the mobile communication company MTN. In 1997, Bekker became the CEO of Naspers, transforming the company from a traditional print media business into a global internet and technology investor. A pivotal moment in his career was Naspers' early investment in Tencent Holdings, which proved to be one of the most successful venture capital investments in history. During his tenure, Naspers' market capitalization grew exponentially. In 2014, he stepped down as CEO but returned as chairman in 2015.
Key Business Strategies
One of Bekker’s distinctive strategies was his compensation structure. In 1999, he opted to forgo a salary and instead receive compensation through stock options, aligning his financial interests with those of the shareholders. Under his leadership, Naspers invested in pay television, mobile telephony, and various internet services, expanding its operations across Europe, Africa, Latin America, China, and India.
