Early Life and Education
Kamal Ghaffarian was born in Iran and moved to the United States at the age of 18 to pursue higher education. He holds multiple degrees, including Bachelor of Science degrees in engineering from The Catholic University of America and a Master of Science degree from George Washington University. He also has a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems and a Ph.D. in Technology.
Rise to Success
Ghaffarian's entrepreneurial journey began in 1994 when he co-founded Stinger Ghaffarian Technologies (SGT), which became NASA's second-largest engineering services provider. SGT was later sold to KBR for $355 million in 2018. Ghaffarian then shifted his focus to transformative technologies, establishing X-energy in 2009 to develop small modular nuclear reactors. In 2013, he co-founded Intuitive Machines, which achieved a historic soft landing on the Moon in February 2024, the first by a private company. In 2016, Ghaffarian co-founded Axiom Space to construct the world's first commercial space station.
