Early Life and Career Beginnings
Ge Weidong's journey began in an ordinary rural area in southwest China. In 1992, after graduating, he returned to his hometown and began working as a foreign trade clerk at a local grain and oil company. This seemingly unremarkable job provided a crucial foundation for his future investment endeavors. Over eight years of engaging with spot trading of agricultural commodities such as soybeans, rapeseed, and barley, he amassed considerable expertise in the commodities markets. In the early 2000s, as China's futures market expanded rapidly, Ge recognized the immense opportunities and, with approximately 100,000 yuan in capital, he boldly entered the emerging market.
Rise to Success and Investment Strategies
Unlike many novice investors at the time, Ge's experience in spot trading allowed him to make astute judgments in the agricultural futures sector. He achieved impressive returns of 50-60% in regular years and even up to three to four times during favorable conditions. Notably, during the 2008 global financial crisis, his investment portfolio surged against the trend. Ge Weidong is the chairman and CEO of Shanghai-based Chaos Investment. The firm trades stocks, commodity futures and invests in Chinese startups.
Key Investments and Achievements
Ge Weidong's best-known investment is an early bet in Chinese semiconductor firm MetaX Integrated Circuits, which went public in Shanghai in December 2025. In December 2025, Ge Weidong invested in Muxi, and his holdings surged to ~18.844 billion yuan, yielding over 10 billion yuan in profit. In the semiconductor sector, Ge Weidong held over 3.6 billion yuan worth of GigaDevice shares as of the end of Q3 2025.
