John Reece was born in March 1957 in Sunderland, England. He attended Bede School (now Sunderland College) and later studied economics at Queens' College, Cambridge.

Reece began his career as a chartered accountant and partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, specializing in the chemicals industry.
