John Reece was born in March 1957 in Sunderland, England. He attended Bede School (now Sunderland College) and later studied economics at Queens' College, Cambridge.

Reece began his career as a chartered accountant and partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, specializing in the chemicals industry. In 2000, he joined INEOS as Financial Director, less than two years after the company's founding. Through his financial leadership, Ineos expanded significantly.
