Bruce Flatt was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in 1965. His father was an executive at a mutual fund company. Flatt demonstrated an early interest in business and finance. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Manitoba in 1985.
Rise to Success
Flatt's career began at Ernst & Young, where he worked as a chartered accountant. In 1990, he joined the investment division of Brascan, the predecessor to Brookfield Asset Management. He rose through the ranks, becoming the chief executive of Brookfield Properties in 2000 and CEO of Brookfield Asset Management in 2002. Under his leadership, Brookfield has expanded its global presence to over 30 countries. His key acquisitions include the purchase of Olympia & York properties and a majority stake in Oaktree Capital Management.
