Early Life
John Lim's journey began in Singapore, where he grew up. He was born in a public housing flat. His father was a school teacher. Lim’s childhood experiences instilled in him a strong work ethic. He graduated with first-class honors in engineering at the National University of Singapore.
Rise to Success
Lim's career began in 2002 when he co-founded ARA Asset Management, a real estate fund manager, with backing from Li Ka-shing. He was 45 years old at the time. Under his leadership, ARA grew significantly, encompassing eight real estate investment trusts and boasting billions in assets under management. In 2016, Lim, along with Warburg Pincus and China's AVIC Trust, took ARA private in a $1.3 billion buyout. In July 2025, a consortium led by Starwood Capital Group took ESR private from the Hong Kong stock exchange in a deal that valued it at $7.1 billion. Lim, who sold his stake in ESR Group and resigned from the board, now chairs JL Family Office.

Philanthropy
John Lim and his son Andy Lim established the Lim Hoon Foundation. The foundation focuses on providing scholarships to students in Singapore, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Lim Hoon Foundation has granted over 1,600 bursaries to students. In April 2022, the foundation contributed $3 million to set up the JLFO-LHF Scholarship at the Singapore Management University, providing scholarships to 12 students annually.
