Early Life
Ivan Ignatyevich Savvidis was born on March 27, 1959, in Santa, Tsalka District, Georgian SSR, to Pontic Greek parents. He grew up in a family of workers and was raised with a strong connection to his Greek heritage, speaking Pontic Greek until the age of seven.
Rise to Success
Savvidis's career began in the 1980s at the Don State Tobacco Factory, where he held various positions before becoming General Director of CJSC Donskoy Tabak in 1993. Under his leadership, Donskoy Tabak became the largest tobacco company in Russia. In 2018, he sold Donskoy Tabak to Japan Tobacco for $1.6 billion. Savvidis also entered the political arena, serving as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Rostov Oblast and later as a Deputy in the State Duma of Russia.
Key Business Strategies
Savvidis's business strategy has involved diversification and strategic investments. He founded the Agrocom Group, a holding company that has interests in agribusiness, including meat processing and greenhouse complexes, as well as real estate and media assets. A notable venture is his ownership of the Greek football club PAOK FC, which he acquired in 2012, investing significantly in the club and its infrastructure.
Philanthropy
Savvidis is known for his philanthropic activities, particularly within the Greek and Russian communities. He has served as President of the Federation of Greek Communities of Russia. His charitable foundation supports cultural initiatives, the restoration of Orthodox shrines, and programs promoting youth development and healthy lifestyles. He also has been involved in supporting refugees.
