Early Life
Ilson Mateus Rodrigues was born in 1963 in the state of Maranhão, Brazil, where he started working at age 12. His early career included working as a miner and mechanic, and later, producing cachaça, a traditional sugarcane-based alcoholic beverage. This early exposure to various trades and business ventures would lay the groundwork for his future success. In 1984, while working in the open-cast mines of Serra Pelada, Mateus heard about Balsas, a town experiencing rapid growth in soybean cultivation. Recognizing the potential for food demand, he decided to establish a grocery store there.
Rise to Success
In 1986, Ilson Mateus opened a small 50 m² grocery store in Balsas, which marked the beginning of Grupo Mateus. He quickly expanded the business, adding delivery services to surrounding towns, and transforming the grocery store into a medium-sized supermarket known as Mateus Supermercados. Mateus strategically expanded, opening new stores in the state of Maranhão and diversifying the business. In 2007, the company opened the “Bumba Meu Pão” bakery and implemented cash-and-carry sales in Mix Mateus stores. The company’s success culminated in an IPO in October 2020, making it the largest IPO in Brazil that year and propelling Mateus into the ranks of billionaires.
