Early Life
Harold Glenn Hamm was born on December 11, 1945, in Lexington, Oklahoma, as the youngest of 13 children to sharecroppers. Growing up in rural Oklahoma, Hamm's early life was marked by hard work and a strong family ethic. His earliest memory is picking tomatoes barefoot in the Oklahoma soil. At 16, he worked at a gas station and later in oil refineries. He graduated from Enid High School in 1964.
Rise to Success
Hamm started his career at 18 by working for an oilfield services contractor. In 1967, he founded Shelly Dean Oil Company, later renamed Continental Resources. Hamm's vision led to the use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing in North Dakota's Bakken region, revolutionizing the U.S. oil industry. He transformed Continental Resources into one of the largest independent oil companies in the U.S..

Hamm's strategy involved identifying and investing in promising oil and gas plays. He built Continental Resources through strategic acquisitions and a focus on innovative extraction methods, particularly fracking. His approach to risk-taking, combined with technological advancements, fueled his company's growth.
Philanthropy
Hamm is committed to philanthropy, particularly in healthcare and education. He has contributed over $65 million to the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center at the University of Oklahoma, aiming to find a cure for diabetes. He has also donated to the University of North Dakota and the University of Mary to support engineering programs. In 2011, he signed The Giving Pledge, promising to give away the majority of his wealth during his lifetime.
