Early Life
Hans Sy was born in 1955 in the Philippines. He is one of six children of Henry Sy Sr. and Felicidad Tan, the founders of SM Investments. Growing up, Sy, along with his siblings, received hands-on training in the family business from a young age, learning the ropes in the family's SM stores. Sy recalled working in various roles, including taking out the garbage and working as a cash clerk.
Rise to Success
Sy graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from De La Salle University. He officially joined SM Cubao's Menswear Section in 1978. Sy's career progressed within the family business. He served as the President of SM Prime Holdings, the property development arm of the SM Group, until 2016. He is currently Chairman of China Banking Corporation, Chairman of National University and holds the position of Adviser to the Board of SM Investments Corporation, which is currently the largest conglomerate in the Philippines.
Key Business Strategies
Hans Sy is known for his focus on sustainability and disaster risk reduction. He spearheaded the installation of over 5,000 solar panels on SM malls' rooftops. Sy is also the first Filipino member of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) or ARISE International Board, the top global business leaders' group on disaster risk reduction management (DRRM).
Philanthropy
Hans Sy has been recognized for his contributions to nation-building through sustainability and disaster risk reduction. He spearheaded initiatives in solid waste management, water conservation, air quality, and energy efficiency programs under the SM Group. Sy and his family also established the SM Foundation Inc., which helps underprivileged youths, the disabled and the elderly. The focus on philanthropic efforts is part of the legacy of his father, Henry Sy Sr.
