George H. Bishop was born in 1937 in Smith County, Mississippi. From a young age, he displayed a keen interest in petroleum geology.
Rise to Success
Bishop's career took off when he founded GeoSouthern Energy in 1981. The company quickly became known for its strategic investments in the Eagle Ford shale in Texas, one of the largest natural gas plays in the U.S. In 2013, a pivotal moment came when GeoSouthern sold its South Texas fields to Devon Energy for $6 billion. Bishop further expanded his ventures by reinvesting in Louisiana shale plays and in 2021, he sold his stake in GEP Haynesville for $1.85 billion.
