Early Life and Education
George H. Bishop was born in 1937 in Raleigh, Mississippi. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in petroleum geology, which led him to pursue a degree in the field. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1958 with a degree in petroleum geology.
Rise to Success
Bishop's career began with his education in petroleum geology, which set the foundation for his success in the energy sector. In 1981, he founded GeoSouthern Energy, a petroleum and natural gas exploration company, based in The Woodlands, Texas. Through his leadership, the company made significant investments in the Eagle Ford shale in South Texas. One of the biggest deals in the oil boom was when GeoSouthern sold its south Texas fields to Devon Energy in 2013 for $6 billion. In 2015, Bishop invested in a shale natural gas play in Louisiana. In 2021, Bishop sold his stake in GEP Haynesville to Southwestern Energy for $1.85 billion.
