Friede married Axel Springer in 1978, becoming his fifth wife. After Axel Springer's death in 1985, she took over managerial control of Axel Springer AG, securing the company's future by buying back shares and regaining control. She appointed Mathias Döpfner as the new CEO in 2002, who helped relaunch the company in the digital media market. Under her guidance, Axel Springer SE has become one of Europe's largest and most successful media companies.
