Early Life
Dmitry Aleksandrovich Pumpyansky was born on March 22, 1964, in Kirov, Russia. He graduated from the Kirov Ural Polytechnic Institute in 1986 with a degree in metallurgy. He furthered his education and earned a Candidate of Sciences (Engineering) and a Doctor of Science (Economics) degree.
Rise to Success
Pumpyansky's career started as a metals trader. He then oversaw several metal plants in the Ural region during the 1990s before taking over the Sinarsky Pipe Factory. His career took a significant turn in 2002 when he joined OAO TMK, a Russian global manufacturer of steel pipes for the oil and gas industry. He, along with fellow billionaires Sergei Popov and Andrei Melnichenko, acquired the company. In 2006, he bought out his partners, becoming the sole owner of TMK. He served as the chairman of TMK until March 2022.
Key Business Strategies
Pumpyansky transformed OAO TMK into a global leader in the steel pipe industry by expanding its operations internationally. His leadership was instrumental in increasing the company's market share. In March 2021, TMK acquired an 86.5% stake in its rival, ChelPipe Group. He stepped down from his positions at TMK in March 2022, and the EU and UK imposed sanctions on him due to his alleged links to the Russian government.
Philanthropy
Pumpyansky is also known for his philanthropic work, particularly in education and healthcare, though specific amounts are not readily available through a simple search. His companies also contributed to the renovation of a stadium used in the 2018 World Cup in Ekaterinburg.
