Early Life
Ding Shizhong was born in 1970 in Quanzhou, China. At the age of 16, he began working to support his family. His early experiences included reselling shoes made by his father, which ignited his passion for the footwear industry. Ding realized that in order to make a lasting impact, he needed to build a brand.
Rise to Success
Ding founded Anta Sports in 1994 with his brother Ding Shijia. The company was initially a shoe manufacturer. Ding focused on cost-effective manufacturing and wholesale distribution. In 2007, Anta Sports was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX), which provided the capital for significant expansion. A key turning point was the acquisition of the Fila trademark in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau in 2009, which helped propel Anta into a multi-brand strategy.
Key Business Strategies
Ding's business acumen is reflected in his strategic acquisitions. The purchase of Fila and, later, Amer Sports (which includes brands like Arc'teryx, Salomon, and Wilson), expanded Anta's portfolio and global reach. He focused on creating a vertically integrated business model, controlling the supply chain from design to manufacturing. Ding also emphasized the importance of creating "mutual value" with consumers, partners, employees, the environment, and society. In January 2026, Anta acquired a 29% stake in Puma, solidifying Anta's global expansion further.
Philanthropy
Ding Shizhong has demonstrated a commitment to philanthropy, donating RMB 14 million to aid recovery efforts after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. In December 2021, Ding and his family donated shares worth $1.2 billion to the Hemin Foundation, a charity supporting community development and charitable activities. This commitment to philanthropy is a part of a larger effort to promote China's "common prosperity" initiative.
