Charlwin Mao, also known as Mao Wenchao, was born in Hubei Province, China. He excelled academically from a young age. In 2003, he was admitted to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where he majored in Mechatronics. During his time there, he participated in international exchange programs and entrepreneurship competitions, setting the stage for his future endeavors.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Mao pursued an MBA at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. His travels, and observations of the growing trend of Chinese tourists shopping abroad, inspired him to start a business. In 2013, he co-founded Xiaohongshu with Miranda Qu. The platform, initially a guide for overseas shopping, evolved into a social networking and e-commerce powerhouse, often called the "Chinese version of Instagram."
