Charles Bartlett Johnson was born in Montclair, New Jersey, in 1933. His father, Rupert Johnson Sr., founded Franklin Resources in 1947, a mutual fund company. Charles attended Montclair High School and Yale University, where he graduated in 1954.

In 1957, at the age of 24, Charles B. Johnson became the CEO of Franklin Resources, Inc. He spent 56 years with the company, transforming it into a global investment management firm. Under his leadership, the firm acquired Templeton, Galbraith & Hansberger Ltd. in 1992, solidifying its position in the industry. Johnson stepped down as chairman in June 2013, with his son, Greg Johnson, taking over the role.
