Early Life
Charles Bartlett Johnson was born on January 6, 1933, in Montclair, New Jersey. His parents divorced when he was a child. He attended Montclair High School and Yale University, where he graduated in 1954 with a bachelor's degree in economics.
Rise to Success
Johnson's career began at Franklin Resources, a mutual fund company founded by his father in 1947. He became CEO at age 24 and significantly grew the company. He took the company public in 1971. Under his leadership, Franklin Resources acquired Templeton, Galbraith & Hansberger Ltd. in 1992.

Johnson's key strategies included strategic acquisitions, expanding the global footprint of Franklin Templeton, and a focus on long-term growth. He stepped down as chairman in 2013, succeeded by his son Greg Johnson.
Philanthropy
Johnson is a major benefactor of Yale University, donating $250 million in 2013 for the construction of two new residential colleges. He has also supported various academic and athletic programs.
