Early Life
Charles Bartlett Johnson was born on January 6, 1933, in Montclair, New Jersey. He attended Montclair High School and later Yale University, where he graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts/Science degree. At Yale, he was an offensive guard on the football team. He also served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army.
Rise to Success
Johnson's career took off at Franklin Resources, a mutual fund company founded by his father. He became the CEO at the young age of 24 in 1957. Johnson oversaw the company’s growth significantly, taking it public in 1971. In 1992, he acquired Templeton, Galbraith & Hansberger Ltd., further expanding the company's reach. He stepped down as chairman in 2013. His daughter, Jennifer M. Johnson, is the current CEO of Franklin Resources.
