Early Life and Education
Azim Hashim Premji was born on July 24, 1945, in Bombay, India. He comes from a Gujarati Ismaili Khoja Muslim family. His father was a businessman, and Premji inherited a strong business acumen. He pursued a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University but returned to India to manage the family business after his father's death in 1966.
Rise to Success
Premji took over Western India Vegetable Products Limited, a company that manufactured cooking oil. He diversified the company into various sectors, including bakery fats, toiletries, hair care soaps, lighting products, and hydraulic cylinders. In 1977, he renamed the company Wipro. Recognizing the potential of the IT sector, Premji pivoted the company towards software development in the 1980s. Wipro entered the IT sector in 1980 after IBM exited India. Premji's strategic decisions and leadership transformed Wipro into a global IT giant. Under his leadership, Wipro became India's fourth-largest IT outsourcer.

One of the significant milestones in Premji's career was Wipro's successful listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 2000. Azim Premji is renowned for his philanthropic efforts. In 2001, he founded the Azim Premji Foundation, which focuses on improving education in India. He has pledged billions of dollars to the foundation. In 2013, he signed the Giving Pledge, committing to donate a significant portion of his wealth to charitable causes. His total lifetime giving now stands at $21 billion, making him one of the most generous philanthropists globally.
