Early Life

Wolfgang Herz was born in 1950 in Germany to Max and Ingeburg Herz. His father, Max, co-founded Tchibo in 1949 with Carl Tchilinghiryan. Tchibo began as a coffee importer and seller, later evolving into a retail chain.

Rise to Success

After his father's death in 1965, Wolfgang, along with his mother and brother Michael, took over the family business. Together, they expanded Tchibo significantly. This expansion included adding consumer goods and services like clothing and electronics. Wolfgang and Michael bought out their siblings Guenter and Daniela in 2003, solidifying their control over the family's holding company, maxingvest AG.

Key Business Strategies

The key to Wolfgang's success was diversifying Tchibo's offerings beyond coffee. Under his leadership, Tchibo expanded into various consumer goods, including clothing, household items, electronics, and services.
