Wilhelm "Willy" Michel was born on April 29, 1947, in Burgdorf, Switzerland. Growing up in a prominent Swiss family, he developed a strong work ethic early in his life. His father was a successful businessman, and his mother was a homemaker.
Rise to Success
Michel's career began with a foundation in pharmaceutical consulting. He gained extensive experience in development, sales, and marketing within several industrial and pharmaceutical companies. In 1984, he founded Disetronic Holding AG with his brother, focusing on medical infusion systems. The company's success continued, and by 2000, Disetronic had over 1,021 employees and generated substantial sales. In 2003, the company was split and a portion was sold to Roche. Willy Michel then bought back the injection business and rebranded it as Ypsomed Selfcare Solutions.

A key strategy was his focus on precision engineering and microtechnology manufacturing techniques, leading to the development of reliable insulin pumps and advanced medical devices. Michel retained controlling shareholder status with a combined 71% of the shares, giving him significant control over the company's operations and decision-making.
