Early Life
Tung Chee Hwa was born on July 7, 1937, in Shanghai, China. He is the eldest son of Tung Chao Yung, the founder of Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL). In 1949, when Tung was 12 years old, his family moved to Hong Kong. He attended Chung Wah Middle School and later earned a degree in marine engineering from the University of Liverpool in 1960.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Tung worked as an engineer in the United States before returning to Hong Kong in 1969 to join the family business. He took over the leadership of the family enterprise in 1982 after his father's death. In 1992, Tung's involvement in politics began when he became a member of the Executive Council of the Hong Kong colonial government. In 1996, he was selected to be the first Chief Executive of Hong Kong, assuming office on July 1, 1997, the day Hong Kong reverted to Chinese control.
Key Business Strategies
Tung's family business, OOCL, became one of the world's largest container shipping companies. However, in 1985, the company faced significant debt. In 2018, Tung and his brother sold their entire stake in Orient Overseas to COSCO, a Chinese state-owned shipping firm. This sale generated $4.3 billion.
Philanthropy
Tung is known for his philanthropy and has contributed to various charitable organizations. He is the founder of the China-United States Exchange Foundation and the Our Hong Kong Foundation.
