Tung Chee Hwa was born on July 7, 1937, in Shanghai, China, into a prominent family with a strong background in the shipping industry. His father, Tung Chao Yung, founded the Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL). In 1949, the family moved to Hong Kong. Tung attended Chung Wah Middle School and later pursued a degree in marine engineering at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 1960. He gained experience working for General Electric in the United States and in the family business before returning to Hong Kong in 1969.
