Early Life
Tung Chee Hwa was born in Shanghai on July 7, 1937. He is the eldest son of Tung Chao Yung, the founder of Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL). The family moved to Hong Kong in 1947. He pursued higher education in the United Kingdom, graduating from the University of Liverpool with a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering in 1960.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Tung worked in the United States before returning to Hong Kong in 1969 to join the family business. He took over leadership of Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL), OOCL's parent company, following his father's death in 1982. He led the company for 14 years before his election as Chief Executive of Hong Kong. In 2017, OOIL was acquired by COSCO SHIPPING Holdings Co. Limited, a Chinese shipping giant.
Key Business Strategies
Tung's leadership at OOCL involved expanding its container fleet. He contributed to the development of OOCL's international routes, which was essential as containerization reduced handling costs and enabled scalable maritime logistics. Tung helped revitalize the business during the 1980s global recession and financial restructuring. In 2018, the Tung brothers made the crucial choice to sell their full ownership in the business to COSCO for $4.34 billion.
Philanthropy
Tung founded the China-United States Exchange Foundation (CUSEF) in 2008, which promotes understanding and strengthens relations between the United States and China. He is also the founder of the Our Hong Kong Foundation. These initiatives aim to promote the long-term and overall interests of Hong Kong and foster social cohesion, economic prosperity, and sustainable development.
