Early Life and Inspiration
Torsten Toeller was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1966. His interest in business began early, and he pursued an education in retail after completing his schooling. A pivotal moment came in the late 1980s when he visited the United States and encountered pet supply superstores. This experience inspired him to bring a similar concept to his native Germany.
Rise to Success: Founding Fressnapf
In 1990, at the age of 24, Toeller opened his first Fressnapf store in Erkelenz, North Rhine-Westphalia. The initial response wasn't overwhelmingly positive, but Toeller persisted. He aggressively invested in more inventory and offered steep discounts, a strategy that ultimately paid off. In 1992, Fressnapf began franchising, which led to rapid growth.
Key Business Strategies
Fressnapf's success is attributed to a few key strategies. The company offered a broad assortment of pet food and supplies at competitive prices in large stores, which was a novel approach in Germany at the time. Toeller also emphasized providing expert advice and continuous training for employees. Furthermore, the company expanded internationally, with over 2,600 stores in 15 countries by the end of 2024.
Philanthropy
Torsten Toeller actively supports animal welfare. Through the Fressnapf initiative "tierisch engagiert," approximately 1.5 million Euros was collected for animal welfare in Europe. This amount benefited organizations like VITA Assistenzhunde, which trains assistance dogs. Additionally, 200 local animal shelters, animal welfare associations, and animal therapy institutions have received donations.
