Early Life
Timothy Marvin Dunn was born in 1955 in Littlefield, Texas. He grew up in Big Spring, Texas, the youngest of four boys. Dunn's father worked in factories and farms, and his parents did not graduate from high school. In high school, Dunn was an Eagle Scout and played sports. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1974 and earned a degree in chemical engineering from Texas Tech University in 1978.
Rise to Success
Dunn began his career as an engineer at ExxonMobil from 1978 to 1980. He then transitioned to banking, working at First City National Bank in Midland until 1987, where he became head of commercial lending. From 1987 to 1995, he served as an executive at Parker & Parsley Petroleum, eventually becoming chief financial officer. In 1996, Dunn co-founded CrownQuest Operating, an oil and gas company, and currently serves as its CEO. CrownQuest became one of the largest privately-owned oil companies, producing 140,000 barrels per day, and was the eighth-largest oil producer in Texas in 2022. In December 2023, Dunn finalized a deal to sell CrownRock to Occidental Petroleum for $12 billion.

Philanthropy
Dunn has made significant contributions to conservative causes. He gave $5 million to the super PAC Make America Great Again Inc. in 2023. He has also funded America First Legal and the Center for Renewing America. He also founded Midland Classical Academy, a private K-12 school. Dunn and his wife have given $29 million since 2000 to conservative candidates and PACs in Texas.
