Teo Swee Ann was born in Singapore and developed an early interest in engineering, influenced by his fascination with computers. He pursued his passion for electrical engineering, earning a master's degree from the National University of Singapore. Before founding his own company, Teo gained experience working with U.S. chipmakers, Transilica and Marvell Technology Group, and also China's Montage Technology, which honed his expertise in the semiconductor industry.

In 2008, Teo founded Espressif Systems in Shanghai. The company gained recognition for its innovative ESP32 chips, which are used in a wide array of applications, including speakers, wearable devices, and home appliances. In 2019, Espressif sold 25% of its shares in an IPO, valuing the company at $716 million. The company's market cap was around $2 billion as of May 2023.
