Early Life
Taylor Alison Swift was born on December 13, 1989, in West Reading, Pennsylvania. Her father, Scott Swift, was a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch, and her mother, Andrea Swift, worked as a mutual fund marketing executive. Swift spent her early childhood on a Christmas tree farm. At the age of nine, she began taking vocal and acting lessons in New York City. She attended preschool and kindergarten at the Alvernia Montessori School, run by Franciscan nuns, before transferring to The Wyndcroft School. The family moved to Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, where she attended Wyomissing Area Junior/Senior High School.
Rise to Success
Inspired by Faith Hill and Shania Twain, Swift shifted her focus towards country music. At age 14, she signed with Sony/ATV as a songwriter. Swift's father transferred his job to Nashville to help her pursue her music career. She became one of Big Machine Records' first signings. Her debut single, "Tim McGraw", was released in 2006. Her self-titled debut album was released later that year. Swift's second album, "Fearless", opened at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
Key Business Strategies
Swift's success is largely due to her shrewd business acumen. She has built her fortune primarily through her music, not relying on lifestyle brands or corporate partnerships. She strategically re-recorded and re-released her first six albums to gain control of her masters. Her Eras Tour has become the highest-grossing concert tour of all time.
