Early Life
Michael Anthony Ashcroft was born on March 4, 1946, in Chichester, West Sussex, England. He spent his early years in British Honduras (now Belize) and Malawi. He received his education at Norwich School, Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, and Mid-Essex Technical College (now Anglia Ruskin University), where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in Business Studies.
Rise to Success
Ashcroft's business career began in 1972 when he founded Michael A. Ashcroft Associates. He built a business empire through astute acquisitions and divestments. One of his most significant deals involved the purchase of ADT in 1987, which he later sold to Tyco International in 1997 for $6.7 billion. This transaction forms a substantial part of his wealth. He also had a 72.3% stake in English sparkling wine producer Gusbourne, which he acquired in 2013.
Key Business Strategies
Ashcroft's success stems from identifying undervalued companies and turning them around through strategic investments and restructuring. He diversified across sectors and geographies, which was central to his financial success. His business acumen enabled him to build a large international business services company, and his involvement with numerous companies has been a hallmark of his career.
Philanthropy
Ashcroft is a significant philanthropist, supporting education, crime prevention, and military charities. He founded Crimestoppers, a charity encouraging anonymous crime reporting, and has been a major donor to various causes. In 2013, he signed the Giving Pledge, committing to donate a significant portion of his wealth to philanthropic causes.
