Sudhir Uttamlal Mehta was born in 1954 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, into a Gujarati Jain family. He received his bachelor's degree from Gujarat University. He also pursued studies at DePauw University in the United States and the University of Chicago.
Rise to Success
Sudhir Mehta joined the family business in the early 1970s, assisting his father, U. N. Mehta, in managing the operations of Torrent Pharmaceuticals. Under his leadership, the group diversified into the power sector through strategic acquisitions such as Mahendra Cables, Ahmedabad Electricity Company, and Surat Electricity Company. He spearheaded significant expansions, including the commissioning of Torrent Pharmaceuticals' first manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad and securing the company's inaugural export order to Russia. Mehta also drove international growth for Torrent Pharma into markets like Brazil, Russia, and Europe, establishing multiple manufacturing plants and a dedicated research center, with operations now spanning over 50 countries. In 2014, Sudhir Mehta stepped down as executive chairman, transitioning to chairman emeritus while retaining significant influence.
