Early Life
Steven Ferencz Udvar-Hazy was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1946. His family immigrated to the United States in 1958, escaping the Soviet occupation of Hungary. He attended University High School in Los Angeles and later studied economics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Udvar-Hazy's fascination with aviation began early in his life, influenced by a childhood visit to the Budapest Air Show.
Rise to Success
Udvar-Hazy's career in aviation began in the 1960s, a time of transition from propeller aircraft to jets. Recognizing the high capital investment required for jet aircraft, he saw an opportunity to create an aircraft leasing business. In 1973, he co-founded International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) with Leslie Gonda and his son Louis Gonda, leasing a single used Douglas DC-8 to Aeroméxico. ILFC became one of the world's largest aircraft lessors. ILFC was sold to AIG in 1990 for $1.3 billion. In 2010, after a dispute with AIG, Udvar-Hazy founded Air Lease Corporation (ALC). ALC went public in 2011.
Key Business Strategies
Udvar-Hazy's success is attributed to his deep understanding of the aviation market and his ability to identify and capitalize on industry trends. His strategic vision and ability to negotiate favorable deals have been instrumental in the growth of both ILFC and Air Lease Corporation. He is known for his encyclopedic knowledge of aircraft and airlines.
Philanthropy
Udvar-Hazy has made significant philanthropic contributions, including a $60 million donation to the Smithsonian Institution, which led to the naming of the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Washington Dulles International Airport. He and his wife, Christine, have also donated over $100 million to educational institutions, including Stanford University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
