Early Life
Steven Ferencz Udvar-Hazy was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1946. His family fled the Soviet occupation and immigrated to the United States in 1958. He attended University High School in Los Angeles and later studied economics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Rise to Success
Udvar-Hazy's career in aviation began in the late 1960s. Recognizing the financial opportunities in aircraft leasing, he founded International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) in 1973 with fellow Hungarian Leslie Gonda and his son Louis Gonda. The company grew significantly, becoming a major player in the global aviation market. ILFC was later sold to AIG in 1990. In 2010, Udvar-Hazy founded Air Lease Corporation (ALC), which quickly became a major competitor in the aircraft leasing space. He has served as the executive chair.
Key Business Strategies
Udvar-Hazy is credited with pioneering the aircraft leasing industry. His strategies included acquiring aircraft and leasing them to airlines, capitalizing on the increasing costs of jet aircraft. He built strong relationships with airlines and manufacturers, and strategically navigated market fluctuations and industry crises. His understanding of aircraft and airline operations, coupled with his deal-making skills, propelled his success.
Philanthropy
Udvar-Hazy is a dedicated philanthropist, contributing to various educational and cultural institutions. His notable donations include a $60 million grant to the Smithsonian Institution for the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, which houses numerous aircraft and space exploration exhibits. He and his wife, Christine, have also donated over $100 million to Stanford University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
