Early Life
Fernand Huts was born on June 18, 1950, in Antwerp, Belgium. He comes from an old family of farmers. He studied law at the Catholic University of Leuven.
Rise to Success
Huts started his career at a steel company in Eeklo before joining Katoen Natie in 1981, where his father was a partner. Huts gradually bought out the 19 old partners and transformed the small company into a multinational corporation. In 1986, he purchased Seaport Terminals, a stevedoring company in the port. In 1987, he was named 'Manager of the Year' by the weekly magazine Trends.
Under Huts's leadership, Katoen Natie expanded significantly, with operations in logistics, petrochemicals, consumer goods, and industrial products. In 2015, Huts acquired the waste processing company Indaver.
Key Business Strategies
Huts's business philosophy focuses on 'applied engineering' within logistics, which includes managing complex semi-industrial processes. He emphasizes innovation and a commitment to sustainability, particularly in Indaver's operations. Huts has also been involved in real estate investments, particularly in the Antwerp region.
Philanthropy
Huts has been involved in philanthropic projects, including the development of the Boerentoren (Farmer's Tower) in Antwerp into a center for culture and experience.
