Howard Peter Guber was born on March 1, 1942, in Boston, Massachusetts. He came from a Jewish family, and his father owned a junk business. Guber developed an early curiosity about the world, particularly in technical pursuits. He attended Syracuse University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, and then New York University, where he obtained a Juris Doctor (JD) and a Master of Laws (LLM).

Guber's career began in the entertainment industry when Columbia Pictures recruited him while he was pursuing an MBA at NYU in 1968. He quickly rose through the ranks at Columbia, becoming Studio Chief within three years. He then co-founded Casablanca Record & Filmworks and later served as Chairman and CEO of Polygram Entertainment.
