Early Life
Paweł Marchewka was born on April 18, 1973, in Ostrów Wielkopolski, Poland. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in video games. In his youth, he began trading video games with friends, which led to a business venture. He studied economics at the University of Wrocław and earned an MBA from the Wrocław University of Economics and Business.
Rise to Success
Marchewka founded Techland in 1991. Initially, the company focused on translating and distributing video games to the Polish market. In 1993, Techland transitioned into developing its own games. The company gained international recognition with titles such as 'Call of Juarez' (2006), 'Dead Island' (2011), and the 'Dying Light' series (2015-2022). In 2024, Techland was sold to Chinese tech giant Tencent.
Key Business Strategies
A key strategy for Techland under Marchewka was the development of its own proprietary game engine, Chrome Engine, which was used in several of its games, including 'Chrome', 'Call of Juarez', 'Dead Island' and 'Dying Light'. Another significant factor in Techland's success was its focus on open-world, zombie survival games, which have proven very popular with players. Techland has maintained its independence, allowing it creative freedom and full control over its intellectual property.
Philanthropy
Marchewka is also involved in supporting the community, with Techland donating to aid those affected by the war in Ukraine.
