Early Life
Mochtar Riady, born Lie Mo Tie on May 12, 1929, in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, is of Chinese-Indonesian descent. His parents, immigrants from Fujian, China, instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance. Riady spent his early childhood in Fujian before returning to Indonesia.
Rise to Success
Riady began his entrepreneurial journey at age 22, opening a bicycle shop. He later ventured into banking, demonstrating an exceptional ability to revitalize distressed financial institutions. In the 1970s, he formed Bank Panin, which became a significant player during Indonesia's oil boom. Riady's career advanced when he was recruited to manage Bank Central Asia (BCA). BCA's assets expanded significantly under his leadership. He later moved to Bank Perniagaan Asia, which merged with Bank Umum Asia to become Lippo Bank in 1989. Under Riady, Lippo Bank evolved into the Lippo Group.
