Early Life
Noubar Afeyan was born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1962, to Armenian parents. His family fled the Lebanese Civil War in 1975, immigrating to Canada. Afeyan graduated from Loyola High School in Montreal in 1978 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from McGill University in 1983. His family's experience as immigrants instilled in him a strong work ethic and a drive to contribute to society. This perspective shaped his future career and philanthropic endeavors.
Rise to Success
Afeyan's entrepreneurial journey began in 1987 when he started his first biotechnology company. He earned a Ph.D. in biochemical engineering from MIT in 1987. He then founded PerSeptive Biosystems, which he led to $100 million in annual revenue. After its acquisition, he became a senior vice president at Perkin Elmer/Applera Corporation, where he initiated Celera Genomics. Afeyan's vision led him to found Flagship Pioneering in 2000, a venture capital firm focused on creating and funding biotechnology companies. Flagship Pioneering has launched over 100 ventures, with a total value exceeding $30 billion.

Afeyan's success is rooted in his unique approach to scientific entrepreneurship. He focuses on identifying unmet needs and developing platform companies designed to generate multiple products. Philanthropy
Afeyan's commitment to improving the human condition goes beyond business. He co-founded the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative and the Spiritual Revival Foundation, which address humanitarian and social needs in Armenia and worldwide. He also supports education, science, and technology initiatives through the Afeyan Foundation.
