Early Life
Noubar Afeyan was born to Armenian parents in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1962. His family fled the Lebanese Civil War in 1975 and immigrated to Montreal, Canada. He graduated from Loyola High School in 1978 and later earned a B.Eng. in chemical engineering from McGill University in 1983. He then moved to the US and earned a Ph.D. in biochemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1987.
Rise to Success
Inspired by a meeting with David Packard, Afeyan became an entrepreneur. He started his first biotechnology company in 1987 and has co-founded and helped build over 70 life science and technology startups. Afeyan founded Flagship Pioneering in 2000, which has developed more than 100 scientific ventures. In 2009, he co-founded Moderna, where he currently serves as chairman.

Afeyan's business strategy centers on innovation and identifying seemingly unreasonable solutions to challenges in human health and sustainability. Flagship Pioneering focuses on creating first-in-category bioplatform companies. He is also known for his ability to identify and nurture promising startups in the biotechnology sector.
Philanthropy
Afeyan is committed to philanthropy. He co-founded the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative and the Armenian Spiritual Revival Foundation. His family's foundation, the Afeyan Foundation, had approximately $10 million in assets in 2024 and distributed nearly $3 million in grants that year. The Afeyans signed the Giving Pledge in 2025, committing the majority of their estimated fortune to philanthropy.
