Michael Rees, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1974 or 1975, is an American entrepreneur known for his contributions to the finance industry. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a BA in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Rees also holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Technology Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Rise to Success
Rees began his career in the financial sector, joining Lehman Brothers in 2001 after a stint at Marakon Associates. At Lehman Brothers, he held several roles, including Head of Asset Management Strategy, focusing on strategic acquisitions within the investment management division. In 2009, following Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy, Rees became a founding member and shareholder of Neuberger Berman Group.
In 2011, Rees founded Dyal Capital, which later merged with Owl Rock Capital Partners to form Blue Owl Capital in 2021. Blue Owl manages substantial assets and is known for its strategy of acquiring minority stakes in private equity firms. Rees currently serves as Co-President of Blue Owl Capital and Head of the GP Strategic Capital platform.
