Kim Beom-su, also known as Brian Kim, was born on March 8, 1966, in Damyang County, South Korea. Growing up in a low-income household with four siblings and his parents, who worked in a pen factory and as a hotel maid, respectively, he experienced financial hardships early in life. Kim's upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of responsibility and a drive to succeed. He funded his education by offering private tutoring and sometimes skipped meals to save money.
Rise to Success
Kim's career began at Samsung's IT services unit. In 1998, he founded Hangame, South Korea's first online gaming portal, with an initial investment of $184,000. The company merged with Naver in 2000, leading to the establishment of NHN, where Kim served as a representative. He then moved to Silicon Valley, California, in 2005. In 2010, he founded KakaoTalk, South Korea's leading messaging app. KakaoTalk quickly gained a dominant market share, transforming the way people communicate in South Korea. Kakao expanded into various services, including gaming, shopping, and fintech.
