Early Life
James Robert Crane was born on January 17, 1954, in Dellwood, Missouri. He excelled in baseball during his time at Lutheran High School North. He then attended Central Missouri State University (now the University of Central Missouri), where he pitched for the baseball team and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial safety in 1976. Crane was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2017 for his outstanding pitching career at UCM.
Rise to Success
After graduating, Crane moved into the freight forwarding business. In 1984, at the age of 30, Crane founded Eagle USA Airfreight (EGL) with $10,000 borrowed from his sister. He built the company into a global logistics provider with over 10,000 employees and 400 facilities in 139 countries. Crane sold his part of the company in 2007, reportedly earning over $300 million. In 2008, Crane launched Crane Worldwide Logistics (CWL).

He has also donated to various causes, including Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, providing grants, and donating test swabs and PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, the Astros Foundation donated $6 million and supports a wide range of causes from military family support to cancer research and homelessness.
