Early Life
Charles Bronfman was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on June 27, 1931. He is the son of Samuel Bronfman and Saidye Rosner Bronfman and a member of the Bronfman family, which established a significant financial empire through the liquor business. Charles was educated at Selwyn House School in Montreal, Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, and McGill University.
Rise to Success
Bronfman joined the family business, Seagram, in 1951 and held various positions. He inherited the Seagram spirits empire with his brother, Edgar Bronfman Sr., after their father's death in 1971, becoming co-chairman of Seagram Company Ltd. Bronfman was also the principal owner of the Montreal Expos baseball club from 1968 to 1990, bringing Major League Baseball to Canada for the first time. He sold the franchise in 1990.

Under Charles' leadership, Seagram expanded its portfolio and global market reach. He implemented modern management practices and broadened the company's international presence. Bronfman's strategic moves included acquiring stakes in companies like DuPont. He was chairman of Koor Industries Ltd., an Israeli investment holding company, from November 1997 to July 2006.
Philanthropy
Bronfman is a dedicated philanthropist, focusing on Canadian culture and the Jewish community. He co-founded the CRB Foundation to promote the study of Canadian and Jewish affairs and co-founded and endowed the Historica Foundation of Canada, which publishes The Canadian Encyclopedia. He also co-founded Taglit-Birthright Israel, a program offering free educational trips to Israel for young Jewish adults. Bronfman has been involved in various other initiatives and has committed to donating $25 million to the Birthright Israel Fund for the Jewish Future. Bronfman has been married four times and is currently married to Rita Mayo. He has two children, Stephen and Ellen.
