Charles Rosner Bronfman was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on June 27, 1931. He is the son of Samuel Bronfman and Saidye Rosner Bronfman. Charles comes from a Jewish family with deep roots in Canada. He was educated at Selwyn House School in Montreal, Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, and McGill University.
Rise to Success
Bronfman's career began within the family's Seagram Company, a major player in the global liquor market. He held various positions, including co-chairman of Seagram. He joined the company in 1951 and became a director and vice-president in 1958. His involvement in the business spanned several decades, during which Seagram grew to become the world's largest producer and distributor of distilled spirits. Bronfman also owned the Montreal Expos baseball club from 1968 to 1990, bringing Major League Baseball to Canada for the first time.
