Early Life and Education
James Douglas Packer was born in Sydney, Australia, on September 8, 1967. He is the son of Kerry Packer, a prominent media mogul, and Roslyn Packer, known for her philanthropic work. He attended Cranbrook School in Sydney, where he obtained his Higher School Certificate. After school, he worked on his father's cattle station as a jackeroo, but did not attend university.
Rise to Success
Packer inherited control of the family company, Consolidated Press Holdings Limited, following his father's death in 2005. He also inherited investments in Crown Resorts and other companies. Under his leadership, the company shifted its focus from traditional media to the gaming and gambling industry, building a global empire. Packer was the executive chairman of Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL) and Consolidated Media Holdings, which owned various media assets, and also served as executive chairman of Crown Resorts.
Key Business Strategies
Packer's strategy involved expanding Crown Resorts internationally, particularly in the Asian market. He invested in casino projects in Macau and Las Vegas, aiming to cater to high-roller clientele. He also made investments in online classified sites like Seek and Carsales.com. After selling his shares in Crown Resorts to Blackstone in 2022, Packer received $3.36 billion.
Philanthropy
James Packer has established both the Packer Family Foundation and the Crown Resorts Foundation. Together, these foundations have launched large philanthropic funds. Packer intends these foundations to promote art, culture, and Indigenous education. In May 2023, the Packer Family Foundation donated $7 million to the University of New South Wales for mental health research.
