John Joseph Fisher was born on June 1, 1961, in San Francisco, California. He is the son of Doris and Donald Fisher, the founders of the Gap clothing and accessories retailer. He has two brothers, Robert and William. Fisher attended Phillips Exeter Academy and later graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1983. He then earned a Master of Business Administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business.

After obtaining his MBA, Fisher worked for a real estate company before becoming the president of Pisces, his family's investment management firm.
